My name is Haruto Tonbogiri. I’m 21 years old and live in the United States. I’m primarily a musician, but my love for writing songs ended up turning into a love for storytelling over the years. For the longest time, I’ve had an undying interest in South East Asia, and in Japan in particular. There are millions of fans of anime, manga, and Japanese novels in the West, and I consider myself one of them. Manga in particular had a profound impact on my appreciation for hand-drawn art, my taste in aesthetics, and on my understanding of Japanese history.
Spurred by my interest in manga, I hit the Japanese history books and spent weeks reading about Sengoku jidai and the many figures that rose and fell during Japan’s bloodiest period of civils strife and political intrigue. I read about warriors that had their ambitions cut short on the battlefield, regular citizens that had their lives destroyed by bandits, and children that knew no better being thrown into a war that had little to no understanding of.
My study of history naturally led me to Japanese mythology, and to the religions of Shintoism and Buddhism. Oh boy! Those were some interesting reads! The story of Izanagi and Izanami was so heartbreaking for me. They made such a great couple and created so many beautiful things, and their union was ultimately destroyed by circumstances that weren’t either of their faults. I was so moved by their tale that it bothered me for weeks that Izanami didn’t get to live the happy life she wanted. That’s what spurred me to craft a story that would include Shinto gods/goddesses!
And so, Senkumo War Stories was born. Well, no, that’s a lie. Actually, Death by Ex-Girlfriend was born first.
